Anxiety can vary in its severity. At it’s worst it can be very debilitating and unpleasant and the physical symptoms of an anxiety attack (a racing heart, sweaty hands and a sickness in the stomach) can be very similar to those of a heart attack. In combination with the psychological symptoms of paranoia and mental ‘floating’, anxiety can most certainly be a very unpleasant experience.
In people who experience repeated episodes of anxiety, they often find it is triggered by specific circumstances. This may lead to people actively avoiding those situations in order to prevent themselves from experiencing the anxiety that they feel is associated with that specific situation. Examples of these are social situations, medical appointments, travelling, job interviews.
Anxiety and panic are not natural physiological states that we are born with – they are in fact learned behaviours that we pick up throughout our lives, often by modelling ourselves on those around us. Treatment will involve a degree of ‘un-learning’ these processes. However this is not something that can easily be done consciously through rational thought – in fact over thinking situations can often exacerbate the feelings of anxiety.
A combination of hypnotherapy to help you learn how to change your physiological state to one of relaxation and calm; CBT to break cycles of dysfunctional thoughts and NLP to help you learn how to feel and think positively and constructively, rather than catastrophising as is often the case in anxiety.
